Federal Shutdown | Snap

Earlier today, Governor Wes Moore issued a State of Emergency in Maryland. He cited the ongoing federal shutdown—now at day 30—and the impending freeze of SNAP benefits as reasons for surging $10 million to food banks.

This move, while necessary, feels like an insult added to injury. Rainy Day funds and budget surpluses are meant for moments like this—just as other states have demonstrated.

Here in Maryland, we suffer from a lack of transparency and responsible stewardship. For those of us impacted by the shutdown, the loss of resources, or the SNAP freeze, I urge you: be still. Do not act out of character or make choices that could separate you from your families.

No looting. No stealing. No rioting.

Respectfully, if you are in need, reach out to your local food banks and churches. And if that doesn’t work—reach out to us.
