Public Safety Roundtable with Kurt Wedekind
Yesterday, nine Maryland residents — representing decades of combined law enforcement experience — joined Kurt Wedekind, candidate for Governor of Maryland, for a roundtable discussion on public safety. The conversation was constructive, solutions-focused, and centered around the shared goal of making Maryland’s communities safer and stronger.
Our Pledge
As a group, we reaffirmed our commitment to public safety and outlined the principles that will guide our efforts:
Empowering law enforcement to enforce the laws already on the books.
Providing the resources our officers need to do their jobs effectively.
Building stronger bridges between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
Key Takeaways from the Discussion
Accountability matters. Actions have consequences, and creating a culture of accountability is essential for safer communities.
Staffing challenges. Many jurisdictions are struggling with shortages. It is our goal to incentivize careers in law enforcement to strengthen departments and enhance public safety across Maryland.
Resources and innovation. From improved technology and DNA resources to practical support like a take-home car program, equipping officers with the right tools will make them more effective in the field.
Guiding Philosophy
Beyond policy and programs, Mr. Wedekind stressed that many of the root causes of today’s challenges tie back to family, faith, and morals. He emphasized the need for greater family involvement, as well as strong men who can set the tone, lead by example, and model responsibility within their homes and communities. By reinforcing these values, he believes Maryland can build safer neighborhoods and a stronger future.
Looking Ahead
This roundtable was just one step in an ongoing dialogue. By working collaboratively with leaders, law enforcement professionals, and the communities they serve, we can ensure Maryland has the policies, values, and accountability needed to keep our neighborhoods safe. Our next roundtable discussion will focus around education, and we are looking for individuals, active or retired with experience in the school system, with school aged children, and their safety and educational needs, please reach out if you would like to join our next discussion.
